THE ALMIGHTY GOD

©Copyright 1997 Randall D. Hughes

58 times in the Bible and 9 times in the New Testament, the word "Almighty" is found. Of the New Testament references, 8 of the 9 are in Revelation. Let's examine these 8 in Revelation to see if there is any indication as to the identity of the "Almighty." All Old Testament references are of the LORD (Jehovah).

Rev.1:8 "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."

Rev. 1:11 "Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last:"

Rev. 1:17 "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not;

I am the first and the last: 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."

You will notice vs 8 and vs 11 ties the "Alpha and Omega," and vs 11 and 17 ties the "first and the last," with vs 18 indicating the ONE being referred to is "he that liveth, and was dead." Thus making Jesus the ALMIGHY God!

How many "first and last?" How many "Alpha and Omega's?" How many "beginning" and "ending's?" There can ONLY be ONE!!!

Rev. 4:8 "And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. 9And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, 10The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created."

Notice here the Almighty is the ONE sitting on the throne. He is again mentioned as "which was, and is, and is to come." As he was in Rev. 1:8 He is the ONE who liveth forever and ever. And the ONE on the throne created ALL things!!! Who is the creator?``How many creators are there?

Isa. 40:28 "Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth."

Isa. 43:15 "I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King."

Isa. 44:24 "Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;"

Col. 1:16 "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist."

Rev. 10:6 "And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein."

The LORD, (or Jehovah), was ALONE when He created ALL THINGS, and he was by HIMSELF. This leaves only ONE creator! So God who is ONE Spirit, John 4:24, Eph. 4:4, created all things.

Eph. 3:9 "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ."

The key word in Col. 1:16-17, and Eph. 3:9, is "by." This word "by," in the Greek Interlinear is "through," Strong's # 1223. This word can be defined as: "because of," or "by reason of." This makes these passages easier to understand in light of the verses indicating the LORD ALONE created ALL THINGS. He did so "because" he was planning to become a part of his creation.

Rev. 11:15 "And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. 16And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, 17Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned."

Please notice that even though it mentions "our Lord, and of his Christ;" it continues to flow with no seperation of person, "and he shall reign for ever and ever." Speaking of "our Lord, and of his Christ" as though "they" are one and the same "he." And continue this in the verses following. Notice also here the Almighty is referred to as "which art, and wast, and art to come." This ties to Jesus from Rev. 1:8, and 16:5.

Rev. 15:3 "And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. 4Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest."

There is ONLY ONE that is Holy! Who is the judge?

Acts 10:42 "And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead."

2 Tim. 4:1 "I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;"

2 Tim. 4:8 "Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

Rev. 19:11 "And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God."

So the Judge will be the Word of God, who is Jesus Christ.

Rev. 16:5 "And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. 6For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. 7And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments."

Once again the Almighty is the ONE "which art, and wast, and shalt be." And once again he is the judge!

Rev. 16:14 "For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. 16And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon."

Who is coming? Who is coming as a thief? Who commanded to watch? It is Jesus, God Almighty!

1 Cor. 15:23 "But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming."

1 Thes. 3:13To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints."

At least 34 New Testament references show that Jesus is the ONE "coming."

Rev. 3:3 "If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee."

At least 7 vs refer to Jesus Christ coming as a thief, often times including the warning to "watch."

Rev. 19:13 "And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

It is clear the ONE executing the wrath of Almighty God is Jesus Christ. Is it reasonable that "Almighty God" would have someone other than himself execute his wrath? When you consider, how many KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS are there? ONE! And when the Scripture reveals that Jesus is the ONE King of kings and Lord of lords!

1Tim. 6:15 "Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen."

Rev. 17:14 "These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings:"

Rev. 19:16 "And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

Three verses describe Jesus as the King of kings and Lord of lords. In 1 Tim. 6:15-16, Jesus is described as "the ONLY Potentate" or the ONLY ONE with dominion, the ONLY ruler! Thus once again Jesus is the Almighty God!

Rev. 21:22 "And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. 23And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof."

Here, the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are "the temple" of it. How many temples? ONE! And the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. How many lights? ONE!

Many times John uses the word "and" instead of "even." Not always, but sometimes it is clearly intended as "even." In light of the context here, ONE temple and light, it very easily could be used this way! Other references of "and" as "even." Jude 4, Rev. 1:5-6, 12:9, 20:2.

There is one other reference to the Almighty in the New Testament. It is 2 Corinthians 6:17-18. "…and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." This is a partial quote from Jeremiah 31:1, 9; And also Revelation 21:7. This is a statement of "He that sat on the throne."

The conclusion of the matter is there is ONE God. His name is Jesus. And He is the ONE TRUE ALMIGHTY GOD!!!
